Time management issue

I've always had trouble managing my time. There are so many things to be done but so little time. I wish I would know how to manage time properly, that way I be able to do a lot more. I had so many plans for the past weekend. I wanted to clean the apartment, cook something for the week, do all the homework and readings for school, do laundry, etc. But today is Monday and I only started doing laundry, just finished cleaning, in the process of doing homework and did not even start cooking. But, I did manage to watch a movie and go out with my friends. My problem is that I don't prioritize things, or if I do, i prioritize wrongly. I really need to work on making plans correctly, and sticking to them. I think, if I would write out a plan for the weekend and actually follow it, maybe it would work. But of course, at the same time, everyone one, just like me would want to relax and do something fun during the weekend and not just regular chores.
So, I think I should learn to manage my time well. For example plan a day for chores, hour by hour and a day for fun. Perhaps that way I will get more things done?

  1. What I've found to be a good technique is not to plan out a weekend but just day by day [because you never really know when you are gonna wake up], each morning. Just list all the things you wanna get done. Say the laundry takes you an hour or two to accomplish. Put it on your list as this:

    Laundry [120 minutes]
    Cooking [60 minutes]
Clean up after cooking [30 minutes]
    Eat [30-60 minutes]
Hang out with friends [6 hours]

When you are done listing them, put them into time slots, dividing the never ending list of chores with fun time. You should overestimate time it take to do chores by 10-15 minutes, BUT NOT FOR FUN TIME. Another thing- if you finished your chores early, start the next thing on the list UNLESS ITS FUN TIME. If the next thing is fun time, go to the next chore on the list or just clean your room or something. Also remember to put 10-30 minute dividers between activities like this:

    Laundry [10:00-12:00]
    Time [12:00-12:10]
    Cooking [12:10-13:10]
    Time [13:10-13:20]
    Eat [13:20-13:50]
    Time [13:50-14:00]
    Hang out with friends [14:00-20:00]
    Time [20:00-20:10]
    Clean up after cooking [20:10-20:40]

It is always better to write it out by hand so that you get the satisfaction of checking events off as you go through your itinerary.

Hope I helped! This is how I personally get things done.

  2. I can definitely relate to the time management problem as I battle it on a constant basis myself. On the positive side you did get a couple things in that you wanted to so there is the bright side.
You had a lot in your game plan to try and gte done in the weekend which I have been known to do myself. What I try and do lately is make my time plans more reasonable and priorotize what is most important. For instance I know on weekends I always need to find time to relax or do the more enjoyable things so I will make list of stuff I definitely need to get in like laundry done on Saturday and some class reading and then an "if I still have time" list with cook a dinner for the week. If I don't get to the cooking and at least get the other two in I feel like I accomplished something so do not get so overwhelmed by not managing time properly. Does not always all get done but when I try this it seems to work better. Good luck!
